The Mercedes-Benz G-class, sometimes referred to as the G-Wagen (G is short for German Geländewagen - [ɡəˈlɛːndəvaːɡn], “off-road vehicle”), is a series of full-size luxury SUVs (off-road vehicles) manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr (formerly Steyr-Daimler-Puch) and sold under the brand name Mercedes-Benz. Produced from 1979 to the present.

The G-class was developed as a military vehicle at the suggestion of the Shah of Iran, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, who at that time was a shareholder of Mercedes-Benz. The civilian version of the car was introduced in 1979.

Unlike other Mercedes-Benz vehicle series, the G-Class has retained its unique appearance, whether factory or high-performance from Mercedes-AMG, for decades.

Background

Back in 1929, the Mercedes-Benz G3a was released - the first car of the Mercedes-Benz brand, the designation of which used the letter G. A vehicle with a 6 × 4 wheel arrangement had a mass of about 1.5 tons and was equipped with a 6-cylinder gasoline engine with a capacity of 68 horsepower. forces[5]. Model G3a was produced from 1929 to 1935.

In 1934, a new prototype was introduced - the Mercedes-Benz G4, also with a 6 × 4 wheel formula, but equipped with an 8-cylinder gasoline engine with a capacity of 100 to 115 hp. With. (depending on modification)[6]. The mass of the car has increased to 3.5 tons. The G4 was produced from 1934 to 1939.

Taking into account the experience in the development of off-road vehicles and trucks in 1972, the Daimler-Benz concern and the Austrian company Steyr-Daimler-Puch (now Magna Steyr), which had experience in assembling all-wheel drive vehicles [1], began to develop a new SUV at the insistence of Iranian monarch Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, who owned 18% of the company's shares. The car was planned to be delivered to Iran for border patrols and as an off-road vehicle for hunting. Initially, it was hoped to bring in the Bundeswehr as an additional client. Some of the submitted models found a great response there, but ultimately, for reasons of cost, the choice of the leadership of the German Armed Forces fell on the Volkswagen Iltis. However, the concern did not abandon the idea of developing its own SUV.

In April 1973, Mercedes-Benz created the first wooden model of the future model, and a year later a metal prototype of the car was presented. On March 11, 1977, Austrian Chancellor Bruno Kreisky personally laid the stones for the construction of a new pavilion for Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG enterprises in the city of Graz].

In February 1979, the first presentations of the first G-class SUV took place. Shows of the 460 series were held from 5 to 10 February at the circuit in Le Castellet near Marseille[8]. The choice of buyers was offered a range of four engines. Two of them were petrol (230 G and 280 GE) and two were diesel (240 GD and 300 GD). All cars were equipped with a four-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive. The range of models included five body options: an open, three-door and five-door station wagon, as well as a van in two versions - short-wheelbase (2400 mm) and long-wheelbase (2850 mm). The five-door station wagon also had a base of 2.85 m. To meet the needs of military organizations, it was possible to order a long-wheelbase model not only with closed bodies, but both three-door and five-door versions with a canvas awning. The color palette was limited to five: white cream (German Crèmeweiß), wheat yellow (German Weizengelb), Colorado beige (German Coloradobeige), carmine red (German Karminrot), and green (German Agavengrün) .

In November 1980, the model range was supplemented by a closed minibus, two versions were available for order - a long-wheelbase and a short-wheelbase station wagon. A year later, the company expanded the list of additional equipment with air conditioning[3], a winch, reserve fuel tanks, a hardtop for a convertible car and a protective grille on the headlights. The body color range has been increased from 5 to 22 colors. There was a version with automatic transmission. The volume of the fuel tank has been increased by 16 liters. Production capacities amounted to:1979 - 2801 units, 1980 - 7533 units, 1981 - 6950 units
