Personal life

Skrillex had a diverse upbringing.

Initially, he lived in the Highland Park neighborhood of Northeast Los Angeles but moved to the Forest Hill neighborhood in San Francisco at the age of 2, attended elementary school there before spending some time at a boarding school in the Mojave Desert.

Eventually, he returned to Northern California. Both of his parents were Scientologists, and he was adopted at birth by family friends.

Sonny only discovered this fact when he was 15 years old.

At the age of 12, his family relocated back to Northeast Los Angeles, where he attended a private academy specializing in arts.

The school incorporated teachings from L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology.

However, due to bullying, Moore began homeschooling at the age of 14.

In 2004, he learned about his adoption, and at the age of 16, he dropped out of the homeschooling program.

During his teenage years in Los Angeles, Moore immersed himself in the local music scene. He attended punk gigs in Mexican American neighborhoods in East and South Los Angeles and later ventured into electro club raves in downtown's Silver Lake and Echo Park neighborhoods.

In 2012, Skrillex was in a relationship with English singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding. However, they eventually broke up.

While Skrillex's parents practiced Scientology, he stated in a 2015 interview that he does not follow the religion himself.

He explained that his dedication to music takes up most of his time, leaving little room for religious pursuits.

Sadly, Skrillex's mother passed away in June 2015, which was a significant loss in his life.

In January 2023, Skrillex opened up about his struggles with mental health through a series of tweets.

He revealed that he had experienced the toughest year of his life in 2022, along with many others.

Skrillex shared that he found himself lacking motivation and purpose, which led to the cancellation of his appearances at Movement Detroit and Tampa's Sunset Music Festival.

He candidly admitted to turning to alcohol as a coping mechanism after his mother's passing in 2015, but recognized that 2022 was a tipping point for him.
