Synthwave, born in the mid-2000s, pays homage to the 1980s and early '90s, blending nostalgia for carefree summers and an '80s love affair with technology. Rooted in European disco and electronic dance music, it emerged from mid-'00s dance genres, infusing retro-synth spins on house and nu disco. Initially dominated by Outrun, characterized by four-on-the-floor beats, clean synth melodies, and '80s audio artifacts, Synthwave has diversified into subgenres. Darksynth emerged, embracing B horror, metal, and industrial influences. Pop Synthwave, or Popwave, gained prominence with mainstream appeal, distancing itself from '80s roots. Dreamwave, a gentler variant, evolved into a contemporary, vocal-driven style, merging with Pop Synthwave. Cinematic Synthwave draws from '80s movie scores, while Cybersynth, or Cyberpunk Synthwave, stands out with futuristic, non-melodic compositions, blending classic Darksynth with sci-fi themes. As Cybersynth gains ground and Popwave infiltrates the mainstream, classic Outrun faces a decline, impacted by oversaturation and shifting preferences. In the future, Darksynth will thrive, Popwave will hit the mainstream, classic Synthwave might decline, and Cybersynth will rise, offering a fresh perspective within the genre. The Synthwave landscape continually evolves, capturing diverse influences and shaping the sound of a retro-futuristic future.
